Ryde moves to hi tech recycling

In a mammoth effort spanning April and May, Ryde City Council has distributed almost 100,000 brand new bins to its residents. The new service will help reduce waste to landfill through increased recycling and composting of vegetation.

Every household was provided with a comprehensive educational package attached to their Garden Veg Bin. This package included a DVD translated into seven different languages, an information booklet with magnet to hang on their fridge, a cleanup calendar, literature and kids sticker. Residents had the opportunity to win a weekend away at an eco lodge in Jervis Bay by answering a question found at the end of the DVD.

Residents’ new bins will be serviced by ten new City of Ryde trucks branded with Council’s ‘Watch Your Waste’ logo. Waste is taken to the WSN’s facility at Eastern Creek and recyclables are taken to Chullora for sorting and processing. Garden vegetation is processed at Chullora and used in many projects around Australia including mine remediation at Catherine Hill Bay near Newcastle.

Ryde’s new waste service leads the industry with all bins being computer chipped and read by the truck when it is emptied. The truck computer will record the weight of the bin and the address. This will give Council accurate statistics on the amount of waste produced in the city and the ability to target further educational programs.

Residents can also recycle a much wider range of products including plastics 1-7, including icecream containers, cordial bottles, and chinese takeaway containers. The new commingled recycling bins make it easier for residents because there is no need to sort before people bin it.
