Below is a brief introduction to the five featured north eastern Victorian Shires.

Benalla Rural City

Located just off the Hume Freeway an easy two hour drive from Melbourne; Benalla Rural City has a population of around 14,000. Located on picturesque Lake Benalla, the municipality features the renowned Benalla Art Gallery and an impressive Performing Arts and Convention Centre. Mansfield Shire

Mitchell Shire

With a population of 31,574 Mitchell Shire is the first non metropolitan municipality to the north of the Melbourne urban region, and is located in the Hume Freeway corridor. Murrindindi Shire

Murrindindi Shire is just one and a half hours scenic drive from Melbourne via the Maroondah, Melba and Goulburn Valley Highways and the Hume Freeway. With a population of 13,119 the Shire’s key industries are agriculture/aquaculture, tourism, and forestry and timber processing. The region is one of the most scenic in Victoria. Its numerous National and State Parks and Forests have lead to rapid expansion of the outdoor adventure, corporate training and outdoor education sector.

Strathbogie Shire

An easy 90 minute drive from Melbourne, Strathbogie Shire has a population of approximately 9,000.

Officially called the Horse Capital of the State, the Shire is renowned for its leading thoroughbred studs and racehorses, while its wineries are producing some of Australia’s best wines. Other major industries include traditional agriculture, manufacturing, retail, health and community services.
