The strategy combines all Local Government’s broad roads and transport agenda into a single document focusing on the following five core areas of concern:
- local road network funding and management – establishing permanent funding arrangements for Local Government to ensure a well managed, sustainable local road system that provides appropriate access and levels of service for all communities
- urban transport solutions – achieving balanced and sustainable transport systems in urban areas, improving urban amenity and providing viable alternatives to private motor vehicles
- mobility and access for regional Australians – achieving, as far as possible, equity in access for all regional communities, particularly to essential services, through the provision of transport services
- freight management – improving efficient movement of freight vehicles through local communities to safeguard community concern for safe, clean and noise free environments
- the long term financial sustainability of Local Government.
This strategy will assist the ALGA to lobby for important transport commitments ahead of the 2007 Federal election. A full copy of the strategy is available at www.alga.asn.au
