business.gov.au receives prestigious international award from the United Nations

Local councils may recognise business.gov.au for its easy to access business information but not as a big time award winner as it recently demonstrated with its win of a United Nations Public Service Award. The initiative behind the Australian Government’s principal website for business won the prestigious international award in the Application of information and communication technology (ICT) in Government: e-government category. There were three categories.

The business.gov.au initiative is one of only three winners in this category and one of only 11 global winners of the 2006 Awards. It is also the only award being presented to Australia. The initiative, originally named Business Entry Point, evolved from a simple online portal to a vital government information channel for business. Regular evaluations, market testing and wide spread consultation have been integral in making the website what it is today.

business.gov.au is consistently in the top ten listing of the most visited Australian Government websites, and last month received a near record 288,465 visits; up 61.6 per cent from the previous year. Critical business tools and services available through business.gov.au also received significant visits, including over 5.9 million ABN look ups in July, and increasing access to the 6,000 transactions available through Transaction Manager.

The award ceremony will take place in Shanghai, China, in October this year.

If you haven’t already done so, we recommend you point your local businesses to business.gov.au
