Local training reduces costs

Through collaboration with local IT specialists, Quill Consulting, the Local Government Association of Tasmania (LGAT) is now offering training for Tasmanian Councils for the UnityDCW Content Management System.

Some 24 out of the 29 Tasmanian Councils currently use the UnityDCW system. Designed specifically for Local Government, the program was developed as a result of a collaboration between LGAT and the Local Government Association of South Australia. It enables Council employees to better manage website data.

The availability of a local training provider will reduce the overall cost of training as previously trainers were sourced from interstate.

Brian Oliver, from LGAT’s Online Services, said training programs will be individually tailored to suit each Council.

“Some Councils have already undergone initial training programs and will therefore focus on advanced techniques and tips,” he said. “For less experienced Councils, the programs will introduce staff to the package, allowing them to gain primary skills. The level of training will also determine the length of the training program, however, we estimate that the average session will run from between one and three hours.”

Brian Oliver said training will take place as close to Council offices as possible in centres such as Hobart, Burnie and Launceston.

A survey is currently available on the LGAT website to assess the potential take up of this training. Numerous Councils have already expressed their interest in sending between three and five staff members to the sessions.

Training is expected to commence towards the end of September 2006 and will run on a ‘by demand’ basis.
