Enhancing town centres

Traditional town centres are the life blood of any community. As focuses for economic, social cultural and community activities they touch every aspect of urban life. The 2007 Mainstreet Conference will provide an opportunity for all people who work in or with town centres to learn, network and exchange ideas on what makes these areas tick. This conference is a must-attend for Local Government personnel, from economic and community development officers, planners, urban designers, strategic planners, place-makers and Councillors, to mainstreet and centre managers, centre coordinators, Chambers of Commerce and business associations.

To be held in March 2007, the conference will officially kick off on Monday 19 March when delegates will travel from Melbourne by chartered train to the City of Greater Geelong for a full day conference program.

Geelong is Victoria’s second largest city and the gateway to the Great Ocean Road. On 20 and 21 March, the hosting of the larger portion of the conference will be in the City of Melbourne. The famous Melbourne Cricket Ground is the venue for the two day conference program, while the conference dinner will be held at the iconic National Gallery of Victoria.

Creating Successful and Vibrant Places – Solutions, Best Practice and Innovation for Urban, Suburban and Regional Mainstreets is the key theme of the conference. The aim is to explore actions, initiatives and processes that have the capacity to tackle the complex range of mainstreet issues. Areas to be addressed include centre planning, design and development, management and implementation of mainstreets, business sector support/development, social and community development, marketing/branding/promotions/communications and tourism, events and culture.

The program features eight international and local keynotes, field trips and over 45 workshop presentations from Australian and New Zealand presenters.

The organisation of the conference is through a partnership of a group of Victoria’s leading Councils including Banyule, Greater Dandenong, Greater Geelong, Glen Eira, Melbourne, Port Phillip and Stonnington.
