Go global: Global Business Law at La Trobe*

“Legal practice is global,” says Head of La Trobe Law School, Professor Gordon Walker. “Real life challenges, such as the Australian US Free Trade Agreement, the Chinese demand for energy resources and the European Union’s status as Australia’s leading trading partner, mean that many legal and non legal professionals need to expand their knowledge to respond to such issues.”

That’s where the Global Business Law (GBL) program at La Trobe steps in. The only program of its kind in Australia, the Global Business Law program presents a unique opportunity for both law and non law graduates, including certified practising accountants, to study commercial law in important areas of global interest, taught by some of the world’s leading jurists.

Academics are outsourced from such institutions as UCLA and Duke University. The degree is oriented to cater for the busy lifestyles of legal, accounting and other professionals. Units are delivered in block release mode over the space of five days. Assessment takes the form of a take home assignment.

A variety of topical specialist units have been offered since the degree began in 2002. These include USA Corporations Law, USA Antitrust Law and Economics, IT Outsourcing Law, International Commercial Arbitration, Chinese Company and Securities Law, and European Union Law.

Over the next year, international academics will come to La Trobe Law to teach subjects as diverse as Chinese Business Law and Practice, EU Business Law and USA Mergers and Acquisitions.

For further information, please contact Professor Gordon Walker, Head of School La Trobe Law on (03) 9479 1462, email Gordon.Walker@latrobe.edu.au or visit www.latrobe.edu.au/lawman
