Managing new directions

In Public Works Engineering, we often see reference to ‘change’ and ‘new directions’ in conference themes, but it is not always clear why. The Public Works profession is a dynamic work environment where the three spheres of Australian government and our communities, can impact on service delivery with a phone call, the stroke of a pen, a resolution, new legislation or the next ‘great idea’. Conferences are all about sharing ideas, seeking guidance and learning new ways to manage change and ‘New Directions’.

“With the proposed legislation regarding new asset management requirements and the implementation of the NSW Premier Department’s, State Plan, A New Direction for NSW, which outlines new community consultation processes and ten year strategic planning requirements; it’s nice to know that our conference can deliver a program that is informative, interactive and enjoyable, providing delegates with solutions to the challenges they face,” said IPWEA’s Conference Portfolio Director, Gary Murphy. In addition to this, it will also give delegates the opportunity to hear from the politicians and State Government agencies that influence Local Government’s work environment.

The conference will address current issues including:

  • the Local Government and Shires Association of NSW Infrastructure Task Force and working groups and the progress they have made in addressing the recommendations from the Inquiry into the Financial Sustainability of Local Government
  • ecological sustainable development principles and finding a common ground with the community
  • skills shortages and high staff turnover rates
  • asset management, reporting and robust internal accounting systems.

“Your attendance is highly valued, so come and play your part in helping us all address our ‘New Directions’,” Gary Murphy said. “On behalf of the Organising Committee, I look forward to welcoming you to the IPWEA NSW Conference and CivEnEx in May 2007.”
