The word is going out for Mayors to bat for community harmony by taking part in Crickids Australia’s Biggest Cricket Game on Harmony Day on 21 March. Crickids, Australia’s Biggest Cricket Game, is an attempt to set the national record for the most people participating in cricket games on the same day. Already nearly 100,000 people in over 650 school communities have registered to take part, with many schools planning to invite their local Mayor to get the cricket creams out of the closet and join a student team.
The game, arranged by the Cricket Australia and the Department of Immigration and Citizenship, is a low cost, participative way for Councils to support the Harmony Day messages of respecting people from different backgrounds, equal participation in the Australian community and a fair go for all. Elsewhere on Harmony Day, Local Governments have planned a wide range of events. Brisbane City Council and the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) will host live music, dance and other performances in Brisbane’s Queen St Mall. The event, now in its fifth year, always proves popular with Brisbane shoppers and office workers on their lunch time break.
For its contribution to the national event, the Gold Coast City Council is orchestrating 21 Days of Harmony across the Gold Coast. Starting on 21 March the City’s local libraries will hold events with multicultural themes including photographic exhibitions, language training and story telling.
Harmony Day is celebrated each year and is administered by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship. It is about bringing people together to promote Australian values and to celebrate the Australian way of life.
