Councils across Victoria are being urged to showcase ‘shady’ initiatives within their communities. As well as helping to protect their residents from skin cancer, Councils could win recognition in the 2007 SunSmart Shade Awards.
SunSmart Manager, Kylie Strong, said Councils who provide shade in their communities are helping to protect people from over exposure to ultraviolet radiation, which is an important way to reduce the high rate of skin cancer.
“Shade is just as important in protecting against skin cancer as sunscreen, hats, clothing and sunglasses,” she said. “It is an important component of a Council’s responsibility to provide a safe, healthy environment for their community members. Unfortunately, our research has indicated that some municipalities have a lack of shade structures and policies, especially at recreational facilities, which makes avoiding the sun very difficult. We know that while some Councils are working hard to provide shade, many others are not providing appropriate shade to protect their residents from UV radiation and skin cancer.”
The SunSmart Shade Awards recognise the important work that Councils are doing in Victoria and encourage other Councils to plan for shade.
Last year’s SunSmart Shade Award winners included Melbourne City Council, Whittlesea City Council and Murrindindi Shire Council.
Entries for the 2007 SunSmart Shade Awards close on Friday 16 March, with winners announced in April. For more information or an entry form, contact Chantelle Miller on (03) 9635 5617.
