Personal emergency plan kit a first

The Shire of Yarra Ranges has received $50,000 in Federal Government funding to further develop a personal emergency plan kit. Launched in April 2006, the kit is designed to assist older residents plan appropriate responses to emergencies that occur around the home.

The kit includes:

  • a leaflet titled, A guide for developing your emergency plan at home
  • a How to assist people develop their plans workbook
  • a guide for services
  • a telephone booklet, My Emergency Plan, with space to record specific contact details.

Council’s Director Social and Economic Development, Alison Cran, said the kit is believed to be the first of its kind developed by a Victorian Council.

“The personal emergency plan kit is great to provide some of the more vulnerable people in the community, and those that support them, with a tool to prepare for emergencies,” she said. “It was designed to be used by those who regularly come in contact with older residents, such as friends and family, volunteer organisations, home carers, recreation providers, doctors, pharmacists, nurses and other health professionals. It gives older residents the opportunity to be better prepared for home emergencies, such as falling over, cardiovascular events, and natural hazards, such as fire and storms. “The kit is potentially a model for other parts of the State and beyond.”

Alison Cran said while the kit was specifically designed with the needs of older people in mind, it has wider application.

“The need to effectively plan for emergencies applies to people of all ages, especially those living in more isolated rural areas,” she said. “The kit will be introduced and promoted by community leaders, to ensure the widest possible take up within a community.”
