Hobsons Bay maintains a unique mix of heritage, industry and nature. With over 20 kilometres of coastline, five creeks and a series of shopping villages, Hobsons Bay is a great place to explore by bike or on foot.
One of the most popular trails in the city is the Hobsons Bay Coastal Trail. Spanning over 23 kilometres, the trail hugs the coastline from the West Gate Bridge in Spotswood to Skeleton Creek in Altona Meadows. The trail takes you through the historic seaport of Williamstown, past sandy beaches, internationally significant wetland habitats, through the beach side suburb of Altona and beyond.
Hobsons Bay City Council is committed to the development of bike and shared paths as means of sustainable transport, and the positive health benefits that they promote. In 2006, Council received over $120,000 funding through Parks Victoria’s Metropolitan Trail Network Grants Program to upgrade cycling paths. The paths will encourage residents and visitors to Hobsons Bay to get out and enjoy some physical activity, while exploring the city’s stunning parklands and open spaces.
Planned improvements include the construction of the next stage of the Laverton Creek Trail in Altona Meadows, extension of the Skeleton Creek Trail in Laverton, and the completion of the Skeleton Creek Trail in Altona Meadows.
Earlier this year the Council received $50,000 funding through the State Government’s Local Area Access Program (LAAP). This funding will assist with the ‘Sciencewalk to Scienceworks’ program, which will link Scienceworks Museum, Spotswood train station, the ferry and bicycle punt jetty on the Yarra River, the Hobsons Bay Coastal Trail and the Spotswood Shopping Centre via a well signed pedestrian network that will be attractive and easy to follow.
