Torres Youth Council continues strong growth

Torres Shire’s Youth Council provides an important link between youth and Local Government. The Youth Council was reactivated in 2006 to promote discussion of important topics among local youth and enhance the development of community leadership skills.

The eight Youth Council members discuss broad issues, from underage drinking to career pathways, and also brainstorm current concerns at their monthly meeting.

Youth Support Coordinator, William McKeown, believes the group has increased an awareness of youth issues.

“The community is aware of the Youth Council,” he said.

“The Torres Council is now seeking advice from the Youth Council when planning something for young people.”

Youth Councillors can improve their leadership skills and learn more about their community by being involved in the Youth Council.

Police and Blue Light Disco representatives are invited to meetings, involving other community groups in the decision making process.

The Youth Council has also developed a website with current information, photos and minutes from past meetings, providing a valuable resource to local youth.

The Youth Council, according to William McKeown, is going from strength to strength.

“It has initiated a ‘Green Thumbs’ program at the High School and created a website,” he said. “It is currently working on a Junior Rugby League program to get kids involved in sport.”
