$8 million sports facility a boost for Whitehorse

The City of Whitehorse is developing an $8 million multipurpose indoor sports facility that will provide a major boost to sporting facilities in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs.

Council approved the schematic design for the facility at a Council meeting in July.

A three dimensional model of the facility, which will be built on Council owned land, is now on display for community comment and feedback.

Whitehorse Mayor, Councillor John Koutras, said the facility will feature four indoor and four outdoor courts with the potential to accommodate a range of sporting groups including netball, basketball, indoor soccer and volleyball.

“The facility will also include an occasional childcare centre, multipurpose community room and a kiosk with adjoining covered community terrace,” he said. “The design features a number of ecologically sustainable features, including the use of low consumption lighting, solar hot water and a rainwater collection system to create an energy efficient building. Other environmentally friendly features include the use of natural lighting for indoor courts, natural ventilation systems and solar glazing to windows to maintain indoor temperatures.”

Council is funding the multipurpose indoor sports facility over three financial years, with $5.8 million allocated in the current 2007/2008 budget.

Funding for the project includes a $500,000 grant from the Victorian Government, which is currently being finalised through the Department
of Education and Training.

Construction is expected to commence later this year, with completion due by October 2008.
