Belmont takes top honours in customer service

Western Australia’s City of Belmont has taken out the Local Government division of the 2006/2007 Customer Service Institute of Australia Excellence Awards for customer service.

The prestigious award was presented to Council representatives at an awards dinner in Sydney in July.

After taking out a State Award earlier in the year, Belmont automatically qualified to compete for the national title.

In addition to winning the two awards, Council also received accreditation certificates. The certifications recognise the City as a quality customer service organisation. A letter of congratulations was also received from Prime Minister John Howard.

City of Belmont Mayor, Glenys Godfrey, said judges were most impressed by Council’s overall approach to customer focused service and its commitment to organisational values.

“Winning these awards is an indicator that we are on the right track in our business excellence journey,” she said. “The process has helped us to understand how we can further improve to benefit our community. It was the first time we nominated for this award, so to be walking away as winners at both a State and national level is very encouraging.”

Belmont CEO, Shayne Silcox, said the awards recognise the team of staff, who are committed to the City’s values.

“Our staff care about their customers and they have been recognised for their commitment to delivering the best service they can each and every day,” he said. “Here at Belmont we work with a ‘people focus’ to ensure we provide meaningful service, and are much more than just a governing body.”

Redland Shire Council in Queensland was also Highly Commended.

Nominated organisations supplied submissions comprising an outline of their background, services, company philosophy, style of management and leadership, their understanding of customer needs, organisational approach to training customer focused staff, innovation and continual improvement. Finalists were then assessed by a panel of judges, including a site inspection to evaluate the organisation.
