The City of Fremantle is continuing its proactive approach to climate change. Council has not only adopted the Kyoto Protocol, but has initiated programs, such as Travel Smart and Living Smart, to reduce the harmful impact greenhouse gases have on the environment.
Now, the City of Fremantle is home to Western Australia’s first carbon neutral hotel, with the four star Esplanade Hotel Fremantle using World Environment Day to challenge other businesses to follow its lead on climate change.
Fremantle Mayor, Peter Tagliaferri, congratulated the Esplanade Hotel for showing leadership within the business community.
“As a Council, we are committed to environmental and social responsibility and, as such, we are delighted with the Esplanade’s achievements – they are yet another jewel in Fremantle’s ‘green’ crown and are setting a wonderful example,” he said.
Managing Director of the Esplanade Hotel, Marylyn New, said businesses need to consider the impact their operations have on climate change, as it is a global issue.
“Climate change and greenhouse emissions present pressing global challenges – challenges that will only be successfully resolved if the majority of individuals and businesses put the issue right at the top of their priority list,” she said.
In the past decade, the Esplanade Hotel Fremantle has taken many steps to reduce its environmental footprint, including recycling programs, cutting water use, installing energy saving light globes, computer controlled air conditioning and using solar power.
Its recent carbon neutral status has been achieved by securing 9.6 hectares of rainforest in Ecuador through Rainforest Rescue to offset the hotel’s remaining carbon emissions.
