A $47 million plan to build 260 student apartments in the Adelaide CBD has been approved by Adelaide City Council’s Development Assessment Panel.
Adelaide City Lord Mayor, Michael Harbison, said the project will deliver much needed housing for the increasing number of students choosing to live and study in the City.
“Council and the State Government have had great success in attracting increasing numbers of students – especially from overseas – into the City to study at our tertiary institutions,” he said. “One of the great challenges to maintaining this growth is the availability of quality student housing.
“This proposal delivers a significant boost to housing options available for those students considering a move to the City.”
The development involves 260, mainly one bedroom, student accommodation units on the eastern site, as well as a gymnasium, library, cinema, tutorial rooms, a common kitchen and laundry, an outdoor courtyard and secure bicycle parking. The proposal also includes more than
40 one and two bedroom residential apartments on the western side of the site, ground floor commercial tenancies, and 129 car parking spaces.
It is proposed to use a combination of gas and solar energy to generate hot water through the building, while stormwater will be collected in 30,000 litre rooftop tanks and used for the building’s toilets.
