New brochure assists Council conserve heritage

Campbelltown City Council has released a new heritage brochure – ‘What is Heritage?’ – to assist residents to identify heritage listed items in the region.

Located 50 kilometres southwest of Sydney’s CBD, Campbelltown has a rich Aboriginal history and over 350 sites, places and relics have been documented in the area. The City was also one of the first sites of European settlements in the colony of New South Wales, which has led to the declaration of further significant landmarks.

To conserve the City’s heritage, Council’s Heritage Protection Sub Committee identified a need for the community to be able to access simple, user friendly information about heritage.

Mayor of Campbelltown, Councillor Aaron Rule, said the brochure is one way Council can assist residents in accessing the basic information they need about heritage, all in one convenient reference tool.

“The ‘What is Heritage?’ brochure was developed with residents in mind and aims to answer some of the common questions that may arise pertaining to heritage related issues,” Mayor Rule said. “It can be downloaded from Council’s website and residents can also pick up a hard copy from the Civic Centre, or we can post one out on request.”

The brochure explores a range of issues, including what heritage is, the various levels of heritage significance, why heritage is important in the Campbelltown Local Government Area, Council’s role in planning for heritage, what the term ‘heritage listing’ means, as well as a range of other related information.
