Shoalhaven investigates new methods to raise funds

In the interests of providing better infrastructure, Shoalhaven City Council is looking at innovative measures to raise funds for essential services.

Council’s General Manager and Assistant General Manager presented a proposal to the Community Consultative Body of Shoalhaven Heads about the possibility of raising funds through the sale of public land in Shoalhaven Heads.

Situated between ocean and river beaches, Shoalhaven Heads is a popular destination for visitors to the New South Wales south coast. It has three times the State average of public open space per head of population in the township.

Any funds raised from the sale of the public land in this area would be used to provide capital works and infrastructure for the seaside village.

Assistant General Manager, John Gould, said Council is constantly assessing the quality and life expectancy of its public assets.

“We recognise that there is a growing demand in the community for better infrastructure, whether that is roads, drainage or parks, but Council has only a finite amount of resources for these expensive items,” he said. “Council has now entered formal negotiations with the Shoalhaven Heads Community Forum Sub Committee and Council staff have attended two Shoalhaven Heads Community Forum meetings and two executive meetings.”

Once Council is advised of the opinion from the community body, it will be able to either move to the next stage, which would include broader community consultation, or seek other means to raise funds for the capital works and infrastructure in the village.
