Fremantle Leisure Centre scoops the pool at lifeguard challenge

Late last year, lifeguards from Fremantle City Council’s Fremantle Leisure Centre scooped the pool at the Royal Life Saving Society and Western Australian Local Government Association (WALGA) Lifeguard Pool Challenge. Competing against eight other Councils – Bayswater, Gosnells, Joondalup, Mandurah, Melville, Swan, Kwinana and Vincent – the Fremantle team took out top honours and brought home the challenge cup.

Held in Challenge Stadium’s water polo pool, each team of four lifeguards demonstrated skills in the areas of rescue, resuscitation and surveillance, while judges from the Royal Life Saving Society timed and marked their performance.

Western Australian Local Government Minister, Ljiljanna Ravlich, presented the trophy to Fremantle’s winning team and congratulated the Royal Life Saving Society and WALGA for providing an event where the importance of pool lifeguards could be recognised and celebrated.

“An event such as this highlights the diverse role and contribution Local Governments make to our communities,” Minister Ravlich said. “Such diversity shows the enormous range of community responsibilities shouldered by Councils across the State.”

Fremantle Mayor, Peter Tagliaferri, applauded the Fremantle Leisure Centre team on its win, highlighting a commitment to the safety and care of pool users in the port city.

“This accolade is simply testament to the quality service the Fremantle Leisure Centre provides, matched with the excellent skills of its lifeguards,” he said.
