Rebate offer for NSW councils*

The Department of Environment and Climate Change NSW (DECC) is offering New South Wales councils up to $5,000 to promote its Climate Change Fund rebates to residents.

The Local Promotion Program aims to tap into councils’ strong communication links with residents and support existing Local Government sustainable living programs.

The concept was piloted by Warringah Council for its recent World Environment Day Community Expo, which was attended by15,000 people.

Warringah used the $5,000 to buy and co-brand digital shower timers to give away at the Expo.

“The event went really well and the shower timers were a huge hit,” said Dick Persson, Warringah Council’s Administrator. “They were a great drawcard to engage people in household savings and open up a conversation about the rebates.”

He said thousands of people took away brochures and information about water and energy savings at home.

DECC will be evaluating the program by monitoring rebate uptake across Local Government areas before and after promotions.

Up to $5,000 is available for any promotional activity, nominated by the council, which includes information about the NSW rainwater tank, hot water system and insulation rebates. Councils can pool together to run joint initiatives.

Activities may include production of
co-branded water and energy saving information resources, local advertising to value add to scheduled events, water and energy saving workshops, home audit or water retrofit programs, resources for sustainability events, such as shower timers, brochures or fact sheets.
