Recycling solutions for fluorescent lighting and electronic waste*

In late 2007, Veolia Environmental Services launched RecyclePak© – an innovative pre paid recycling system for fluorescent tubing. Fluorescent lights are 100 per cent recyclable, however, in the past small quantity recycling of fluorescent tubing from multiple sources has always been a challenge.

Veolia is working with environmentally conscious businesses to support the growing need to properly dispose and recycle fluorescent lighting.

Recycling fluorescent tubing is extremely important due to the hazardous materials they contain. The mercury, glass, aluminium and phosphor powder found in the tubing can all be recovered and recycled.

At present, it is not required by law to divert these materials from traditional landfill. However, when a RecyclePak© is ordered, boxes are delivered onsite. Once they have been filled, the customer arranges collection, after which all materials are taken to a designated recycling facility for processing.

The system is completely pre paid, simple and low cost, and also offers customers a viable alternative to the traditional disposal of fluorescent tubing.

In conjunction with RecyclePak©, Veolia has also developed Australia’s first nationwide Electronic Waste Recycling Scheme, which allows businesses to recycle electronic equipment such as computers, printers, photocopiers, televisions and mobile phones. Traditionally these devices, which contain hazardous substances such as lead and mercury, have been thrown into landfill. However, over 90 per cent of materials found in E-waste (including glass, plastic and metals) can be recovered and reused as raw materials.

Veolia Environmental Services has close to 40 years experience in the waste management, recycling and industrial services industries. It’s key aim is to forge innovative and sustainable waste solutions.
