Road safety awards for WA councils

In May, five Western Australian councils were recognised for leadership in road safety at the 2008 Transport and Roads Conference held in Perth. The Local Government Road Safety Awards acknowledge achievements by Local Government in the area of road safety.

A joint initiative by the Western Australian Local Government Association’s (WALGA) RoadWise Program and the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australia (WA Division), the awards recognise Local Government road safety projects and showcase road safety initiatives to stakeholders and the community.

WALGA President, Councillor Bill Mitchell, said the road safety contribution made by Local Governments across Western Australia is invaluable and wide ranging, encompassing safe roads and roadsides, safe speeds, safe vehicles and safe road use initiatives.

“Award recipients should be congratulated for their continued commitment to road safety and the work they do with other road safety stakeholders in the community,” he said. “This shared responsibility is vital if we are to reduce death and serious injury on our roads. It is also important to note that road safety is not just about behaviours, such as drink driving and fatigue, but also about planning, building and managing the road network, encouraging people to purchase safe vehicles and working to achieve reduced travel speeds in our communities.”
