Bendigo heritage buildings to benefit from restoration scheme

The owners of two heritage listed buildings in Central Victoria’s City of Greater Bendigo have been successful in obtaining financial assistance through the Council’s Heritage Restoration Assistance scheme.

City of Greater Bendigo Mayor, Councillor David Jones, said that under the scheme, Council will provide an interest free loan of $35,000 to assist the owners of the Golden Square Hotel to reinstate the verandah and remove external paintwork to restore the hotel back to its original appearance.

“We are also providing an interest free loan of $10,000 to help fund the restoration of the original shop front of the former Baldock Boot Makers Shop,” he said. “Council is delighted to provide funding to assist the restoration of these buildings, which are both located on main roads in heritage precincts. We believe the restoration work that is planned will greatly improve both buildings and the streetscapes where they are located.”

Mayor Jones said that the Greater Bendigo Heritage Restoration Assistance Scheme provides assistance to owners of heritage buildings who want to undertake projects that restore, conserve, maintain and enhance their buildings.

“Greater Bendigo has many wonderful heritage buildings and Council is pleased to provide no interest loans through this scheme to help maintain these important assets,” he said.

“We are at the forefront of initiatives to ensure that heritage assets are conserved and have undertaken restoration and conservation works to heritage streetscapes, parks and public buildings. Through the Heritage Restoration Assistance Scheme, we are encouraging local property owners to do the same.”
