The Local Government Managers Australia NSW 2008 Excellence Awards were announced at its annual conference dinner on 17 September. Some 39 projects were submitted from Councils across New South Wales.
In the category Management Excellence – All Councils, the gold award was won by Randwick City Council for it entry Journey to Excellence.
Merit awards were presented to Rockdale City Council’s Regional Tender for Waste Management Services for the St George Region of Councils and Warringah Council’s ‘Talk of the Town’ – The 2007 Warringah Community Summit.
The gold award for Management Excellence – Rural Councils was won by Tumut Shire Council for its Snowy WS – Commercialised Service Provision at Tumut.
The Governance Excellence in Local Government category gold award was won by Lane Cove for its project, Bringing NSW Together. Canterbury City Council’s Integrated Risk Management Program took out a silver award, while a merit award was presented to Sutherland Shire Council for its Neighbourhood Interaction and Participation Survey 2007.
In the category Corporate Sustainability Excellence in Local Government, the gold award was won by Penrith City Council for its Sustainability Reporting Leadership for Penrith City and Council.
Merit awards went to Randwick City Council’s Using Technology to Build Sustainable Communities and Coffs Harbour’s Coffs Harbour – The Healthy City.
There was no gold award made for the Community Service Excellence in Local Government category, however merit awards were presented to Holroyd City Council for its Installation of School Speed Zones Alert Systems at Schools within the Holroyd LGA, and Wollondilly Shire Council’s Wollondilly Community Strategic Plan 2030.
Finalists for LGMA NSW’s Young Professional of The Year were Ben Lawson from Tumut Council, Alia Karaman from Auburn Council and Brett Richardson from Sutherland Shire Council.
The gold award was won by Alia Karaman who is Manager Strategy at Auburn Council. Alia had worked for the State Government and as a consultant prior to joining Council in 2002.
