In October, Western Australia’s Acting Minister for Disability Services, Dr Graham Jacobs, launched a project that could provide the start for our next paralympic champions. Primarily aimed at Local Governments, the Captivate Inclusion Toolkit outlines the requirements and considerations when offering sport and recreation facilities and programs for people with disabilities.
The kit was developed by the Western Australia Local Government Association (WALGA) in partnership with Recreation and Sport Network, the Cerebral Palsy Association of Western Australia and the WA Disabled Sport Association.
WALGA President, Councillor Bill Mitchell, said the toolkit will help ensure that Local Government sporting and recreation facilities are inclusive for all in the community.
“The champions of the future need to start somewhere, but more importantly, this program helps ensure as many disabled people as possible have the opportunity to participate and become more physically active,” he said.
Councillor Mitchell said the kit provides user friendly information for staff and management of Local Government sport and recreation facilities and programs.
“The need was identified regarding the lack of clarity on roles and responsibilities of Local Government, individuals, families and peak agencies to support an inclusion practice within the sphere of sport and recreation and how it would be addressed at the local level,” he said.
“A resource for frontline sport, recreation and leisure staff, the Captivate Inclusion Toolkit is a holistic approach to the provision of a more inclusive sport and recreation environment for people with a disability to become more physically active throughout the community.”
