Fremantle reaches into its heart for Mainstreet 2009 Conference

Fremantle Western Australia has an enormous heart so it is no wonder that from 15 to 19 March 2009 it will host the 7th National Mainstreet Conference 2009 – Rediscovering the Heart.

Policymakers, practitioners and researchers interested in the resurgence of the mainstreet as the vibrant hub of the community are urged to attend.

Convener David Duncanson, Economic Development and Marketing Manager at the City of Fremantle, says for a long time the modern shopping complex has dominated cities but there has been a resurgence in the mainstreet, where shopping, socialising and entertainment come together to breathe life into the hearts of our towns and cities.

Delegates will see how areas of metropolitan Perth have benefited from the extension of the rail network and urban renewal projects that have resuscitated city centres.

“This conference promises to be an exciting blend of topics covering planning, design, management and promotion of mainstreets,” David Duncanson said. “Final negotiations are under way to bring keynote speakers who inform, entertain and inspire debate, and judging by the quality of abstracts submitted, there will be some new and innovative ideas emerge.

“One exciting aspect of the conference will be the third day, when delegates will have a choice of tours to see examples of mainstreets in action.

“These tours will all use local train services and visit metropolitan suburbs with mainstreets nearby to the railway stations.”
