Diversity challenge hots up

Last month Victoria’s Monash City Council laid down the challenge to any other council that could better it regarding the diversity of its Councillors.

The City of Marrickville in inner Sydney believes it can. Of Marrickville’s 12 councillors five are women and seven are men. The representation includes gay councillors Laura Wright and Mary O’Sullivan, three Greeks, an Italian, a deputy mayor of Irish heritage, Jewish, Egyptian, and a Lebanese Mayor.

“The Marrickville community is fortunate to have such a diverse council that can directly represent a broad crosssection of residents,” said the Mayor of Marrickville, Sam Iskandar. “Having a high female presence in Council also serves as an inspiration for other local women to aspire to leadership roles.

“This Council is reflective of the rich multiculturalism in the Marrickville area and sets an example of a harmonious and peaceful community.”
