Moves by Local Governments to bypass the established carriers and take control of their own broadband needs will come under the spotlight at this year’s CeBIT Australia 2009 Global Conference Series.
While most national and world attention focuses on the planned National Broadband Network (NBN) rollout in Australia, CeBIT’s Access conference will examine how local communities have taken matters into their own hands to equip themselves with the communications infrastructure vital to their future prosperity.
Access at CeBIT Australia 2009 is setting an ambitious agenda this year to provide an informative forum for both strategic and tactical level telecommunications issues.
As a CeBIT opening day event, it is poised to be a high profile scene setter for the three day show, with representatives of all the country’s major carriers, as well as spokespeople for various NBN bidders sure to attract the lion’s share of attention in the wake of the Federal Government’s NBN decision.
But it will be case studies, such as that of Queensland’s Fraser Coast Regional Council, that will demonstrate how community focus can prove a viable alternative to the big picture.
Fraser Coast Council Deputy Mayor, Councillor Belinda McNeven, will outline the region’s efforts to provide a high speed community network for constituents using pre-existing fibre infrastructure as the network backbone.
The managing director of CeBIT organiser, Hannover Fairs Australia, Jackie Taranto, said the presentation demonstrated the practical focus of CeBIT this year as an event to demonstrate the potential and power of information and communications technology to help businesses survive and thrive in challenging times.
Access builds on CeBIT Australia 2008’s successful VoIP and IP Communications Conference. Access will add more policy driven and strategic issues to the practical topics covered last year. The previous event sold out in 2008.
Jackie Taranto said that the Australian Government had also significantly increased its engagement and sponsorship of public sector conference events being organised in conjunction with CeBIT Australia 2009.
