At the recent Local Government Professionals (LGPro) awards for Excellence, Hume City Council took out the ‘Community Assets and Infrastructure Initiative – Projects over $1 million’ category for its five star municipal office building.
LGPro is Victoria’s peak Local Government body, and this award is its top industry prize.
Hume City Mayor, Councillor Jack Ogilvie, accepted the award.
“Council is very proud of this building,” he said. “We took great care to make the best and most environmentally sensitive building possible.
“We now have a landmark building, symbolic of the future of our City – innovative, modern and world class.”
Hume City Council was also a finalist in the ‘Community Assets and Infrastructure Initiative – Projects $1 million and Under’, and Council’s Senior Urban Planner, Matthew Wilson, was a finalist in the Young Achiever category.
Located 15 kilometres north of Melbourne’s CBD in the suburb of Broadmeadows, the municipal building was completed in 2007.
It is a 5 Star Green Star rated building, which was the most energy efficient and sustainable building rating at the time.
The six storey building accommodates around 6,000 square metres of office space, including a customer service centre, offices, meeting rooms and space for 400 employees.
This is the third award the building has received.
In 2008, architects Lyons, won the Commercial Architectural Award from the Australian Institute of Architects at the Victorian Architecture Awards for the building. Council also won the Keep Australia Beautiful Environmental Innovation Award for its 5 Star Green Star Rating.
Broadmeadows is undergoing a period of renewal and development.
As part of Council’s Transit City Masterplan, the precinct the building is located in will undergo further development and improvement over the coming years.
