The City of Onkaparinga has given the go ahead for its integrated transport strategy designed to meet the needs of its rapidly growing population.
The Integrated Transport Strategy 2008–2013 aims to promote a sustainable City, foster economic potential and optimise infrastructure investment.
Key objectives of the five year strategy are:
- the creation of a modern, integrated and well used public
transport system - promoting a walking and cycling friendly City
- safely and effectively connecting communities and businesses
by road - improving independence and connectedness for the transport
disadvantaged.
The initial draft strategy was refined following a recent community engagement process.
As a result of community feedback, lightrail options, better and safer parking around transit stations, and alternative fuel options for the region were incorporated into the strategy.
City of Onkaparinga Mayor, Lorraine Rosenberg, said that an extra 40,000 people will move into the City over the next
20 years, and transport choice, other than just more cars, is a key factor in accommodating this growth.
“A key feature will be the development of a re-energised City centre based around the railway station and bus interchange – South Australia’s first so called Transit Oriented Development,” she said.
“In line with this, Council will continue to advocate for the electrification of the rail line and its extension to Seaford Heights and Aldinga on Adelaide’s urban growth boundary.
“We will also seek improved bus services and the duplication of the Southern Expressway.”
Built to alleviate pressure, particularly during peak hour traffic, the Southern Expressway is a unique concept in road design.
Traffic travels in only one direction at a time, with changeover occurring twice a day.
Mayor Rosenberg said achieving the objectives of the transport strategy will require commitment from State and Federal Governments, along with Council.
The Integrated Ttransport Strategy is one of several key initiatives arising from Council’s future vision, Community Plan 2028.
