Mayor’s message

It’s a busy time for Launceston City Council with many major projects taking shape or nearing completion.

These projects flow on from the community’s Vision 2020, which was developed after extensive consultation in 2005.

“I am Launceston in 2020, I am a vibrant, confident, ‘life size’ city with opportunities for all in learning, work and recreation. I treasure my clean and beautiful environment and respect my heritage. I am outward looking, full of community spirit and move forward in partnership with others. I value the unique role I play in Tasmania and Australia.”

Launceston Vision 2020 identified and set goals for the four priority areas of Natural Environment, Built Environment, Social and Economic Environment and Cultural Environment.

General Manager, Frank Dixon came on board in 2006 and has overseen the creation of a $355 million 10 year Major Works Program that helps to achieve some of the key goals outlined in Vision 2020. He also saw a one organisation, customer focused cultural change program. The program was underpinned by an operational review that resulted in annual savings of $1.8 million.

This month, we launch one of the key components of the 10 year capital program: Launceston Aquatic, and another key project, the refurbishment of the two sites of Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery is well on the way.

These are just a few examples of what’s happening in our municipality. I hope you enjoy reading a little about Launceston and our Council’s work.

Alderman Albert van Zetten
Mayor
