State of the art aquatic centre

One of the centrepieces of Launceston City Council’s 10 Year Major Works Program is a new regional aquatic centre to replace the 1950’s municipal pool at Windmill Hill.

Launceston Aquatic will be officially opened by the Tasmanian Premier, Federal member for Bass and the Mayor of Launceston at a gala evening event on May 22. The celebrations will then continue across the weekend with free swim sessions and entertainment for local residents.

The $26.3 million centre will open its doors to the general public on May 25 providing a year round, indoor and outdoor recreation facility with state of the art facilities in a spectacular location.

The centre will cater for a regional catchment population of more than 120,000 residents and is also likely to be a hit with the growing number of visitors to the City from interstate and beyond. It is anticipated that the centre will achieve more than 400,000 visits a year.

Launceston Aquatic has seven pool spaces including a 50 metre competition pool, diving boards, a 65 metre waterslide, interactive water play features and beach entry leisure pools. There is also a spa, programs pool and café/restaurant area which can also be booked for functions.

Both the Tasmania and Australian Governments have helped to fund the building of the new centre and ongoing support has been secured through a corporate partnership with Rio Tinto Alcan.

The Launceston Aquatic facility was designed and constructed in line with Launceston City Council’s Recreational Planning Principles that include sustainability, beneficial outcomes for the widest cross-section of the community, community health, multi-use efficiency and access for all.
