TMAs – U-MAD if you don’t*

Working in live traffic and closing lanes has always been a risky business. Despite warning signs, cones and flashing arrow boards being deployed, there is still a significant risk of motorists ploughing though the cones and into the rear of maintenance vehicles, or worse still, into the work zone.

To help minimise the damage and injuries caused by this, Truck Mounted Attenuators (TMAs) were developed.

TMAs comprise an impact absorbing attenuator being mounted on the rear of a vehicle, typically a four to eight foot truck. This shadows the work crew and vehicles and protects them from errant vehicles.

TMAs have performed extremely well in many documented accidents, saving the motorist, shadow vehicle driver, and the work crew from serious injury.

Road Management Solutions (RMS) is pleased to announce that the concept of TMAs has been made a lot more practical with the advent of the U-MAD trailer mounted TMA. The beauty of the trailer TMA is that it can be shared around many vehicles, or left at the depot if not required, thus eliminating the need of having a dedicated TMA truck.

The U-MAD trailer TMA was developed in the USA by Barriers Systems Inc, a leading manufacturer of crash cushions and barriers.

The U-MAD offers all the impact attenuating performance of the truck mounted version in the convenience of a trailer configuration. It has many class leading features, such as ‘full width’ protection (attenuator width is 2.3m), which helps to ‘capture’ impacting vehicles, unlike narrower trailer TMAs on the market that tend to deflect the impacting vehicle into adjacent lanes on angled impacts.

The U-MAD trailer TMA also has a unique reusable trailer, which is designed to survive most impacts, allowing for the unit to be towed off the road, and quickly repaired by simply bolting on a new attenuator cartridge.

Industries such as line marking, traffic management and road maintenance will benefit from this latest lifesaving technology.
