Cost effective road maintenance using local crews*

Councils are making roads safer, saving money and protecting local jobs with a new contracting arrangement that enables them to bring in the most effective road repair technology, and a number of highly trained specialists, to work as part of a united team with their own staff.

Trusted road repair and civil contracting company Sharpe Bros responded to increasing unemployment rates with a new solution that generates work for locals by moving away from the traditional contractor arrangement in which all equipment and staff are brought in from other parts of the State.

Joint Managing Director, Michael Sharpe, said it was more important than ever to protect local jobs and keep costs down for councils, so the company had begun working closely with councils’ own road crews to quickly and efficiently fix dangerous narrow roads, soft edges and damaged surfaces.

He said the family company had spent millions of dollars to develop a series of technologies, including the Sidewinder and Flexipaver, to repair and widen roads, without extensive reconstruction and traffic delays.

The Sidewinder shoulder repair process makes road edges stronger and longer lasting, while costs are substantially reduced because a project that would normally take at least a week using traditional methods can be completed in just a day using the Sidewinder.

The Sharpe Bros’ fleet of adjustable patching machines, the Flexipavers, allows councils to pave only the damaged sections of a road rather than digging up the entire surface, saving time, materials and cost.
