New President for LGAT

Mayor of West Tamar Council, Barry Easther, has succeeded in his bid to become the new President of the Local Government Association of Tasmania (LGAT).

The Tasmanian Electoral Commission counted the ballots for the vacant position on 28 July, with Mayor Easther winning comfortably.

He was running for the Presidential role against Mayor Charles Arnold of King Island Council and Alderman David Traynor of Clarence City Council.

Mayor Easther had been in the Acting President role since the resignation of former President, Mike Gaffney, who recently successfully contested the Legislative Council seat of Mersey.

Mayor Easther has had a long and distinguished career in Local Government and achieved national recognition during the mining disaster at Beaconsfield for his leadership of the community during such a devastating event.

In 2007, he was awarded an Order of Australia for his contribution to Local Government and the community.

Mayor Easther has served as Mayor of West Tamar Council from 1990 to 1994 and since 2000, having first been elected to Council in 1983.

He has been the Vice President of LGAT for the past three years.
