Using world first smart technology, Logan City Council in southeast Queensland is participating in a diesel emission reduction trial.
Council is working with clean technology company Peak 3 to measure and reduce its diesel emissions.
City Roads and Infrastructure Committee Chairperson, Councillor Ray Hackwood, said Council was impressed by the research and development work being done by Peak 3 and wanted to get involved.
“When we heard about the technology Peak 3 were developing, we decided this was something we wanted to be part of,” he said. “Two months ago we had the emission measure and reduction technology fitted to one of our tip trucks and anecdotal evidence from our Plant Fleet Services Manager tells us the vehicle has been running smoother, using less fuel, demonstrating greater power when most needed, and showing less evidence of emissions in its exhaust.
“The results from the trial are currently being collected, following the truck being sent to Brisbane City Council’s emissions testing centre.”
Logan Deputy Mayor Russell Lutton, said Council is using the trial to collect evidence of emission reductions and cost savings with the view to installing the clean technology in several of its diesel plant.
“We see this as a really positive step for Council,” Councillor Lutton said. “We want to lead the way for other councils and organisations to follow.”
Peak 3 CEO Col Chandler said the clean technology worked in two parts. Firstly, a computer program monitors all engine components, and secondly, a secondary sacrificial fuel is used.
“By monitoring the engine, the computer can tell where the secondary fuel is needed and inject just the right amount,” Col Chandler said. “This helps the diesel to burn cleaner and produce fewer emissions.”
