Melton residents pay library fines with food

Library patrons of Melton Shire Council in Melbourne’s west will be able to make a difference to families in need this Christmas.

Melton Library and Information Service is holding a ‘Food For Fines!’ amnesty between 29 November and 13 December 2009.

During this period, patrons returning outstanding overdue items can have their fines cleared if they donate non perishable food items to the ‘Food For Fines!’ collection bin.

Melton Mayor Councillor Renata Cugliari said the amnesty would help families struggling this Christmas.

“The Food For Fines! amnesty is a wonderful initiative that helps library users give families in need an early Christmas present this festive season,” the Mayor said. “This wonderful idea allows library users to return outstanding books, DVDs and other materials and have any outstanding fines waived.

“It is also a great opportunity for people to start using the library again, while supporting the excellent work of the Melton Food Bank.”

All donations received will be delivered to the Melton Food Bank at the end of the amnesty. Residents without fines can also make a donation of non perishable food.

The amnesty coincides with Australian Giving Week held nationally between 29 November and 5 December 2009.
