Australia’s 22 million people come from more than 230 different countries, and this March will see Aussie workers lunch together during Australia’s biggest celebration of cultural diversity at work.
‘A Taste of Harmony’ is a week of lunchtime feasting that begins on 15 March and ends with National Harmony Day on 21 March, 2010.
A Taste of Harmony encourages workplaces around Australia – big or small and from every industry – to gather their colleagues for a tasty multicultural lunch.
Staff can bring dishes that reflect their cultural background, their favourite ethnic dish, or cook something from a country they have never tried before.
Best of all, participating in A Taste of Harmony is easy, free and does not involve fundraising. Register your workplace at www.tasteofharmony.org.au then invite your workmates to cook up a storm for your event in March.
Last year, more than 60,000 Australians shared deliciously diverse lunches while getting to know more about their colleagues’ cultural backgrounds.
This year, 13 of Australia’s biggest celebrity chefs and foodies are also joining the party to celebrate Australia’s many cultures through the joy of food, including Maeve O’Meara, Tobie Puttock, Serif Kaya and Cheong Liew.
In its second year, A Taste of Harmony is an initiative of the Scanlon Foundation and is supported by the Australian Multicultural Foundation and the Department of Immigration and Citizenship.
Scanlon Foundation Chairman Peter Scanlon said cultural diversity is a defining feature of our nation and has contributed greatly to Australia’s success.
“Australia has, and always will be, a nation of immigrants,” he said. “A Taste of Harmony gives all Australian workplaces the opportunity to recognise and celebrate cultural diversity, to achieve greater understanding and appreciation of our nation’s key strength.
“Getting together to share a meal is a simple way to connect with your colleagues and community, which increases a sense of trust and belonging.”
