Mount Alexander Sustainability Group maintains momentum

Community members have provided great inspiration and momentum in the journey towards a sustainable future in Mount Alexander. This has been demonstrated by the strong membership numbers for Mount Alexander Sustainability Group (MASG).

With more than 1,100 members, the Mount Alexander Sustainability Group is an incorporated, not for profit organisation on the Register of Environmental Organisations with the Department of Environment and Heritage.

As a collective, it is about working on positive responses to climate change and peak oil and seeking ways to get renewable energy systems in place in the region.

“Our work is essentially guided by our Strategic Plan for 2007–2009 which is undergoing a review this year,” said MASG Chair Bronwen Machin. “Our members are engaged and involved and they include local householders, schools, businesses and community organisations.”

Local donors have continued to provide money to enable MASG to operate. Partnership funding has been obtained
from Federal, State, and philanthropic organisations to keep the momentum going.

“The key focus over the years has been on reducing carbon emissions through improving energy efficiency and increasing the supply of renewable energy,” she said. “This is a goal that cannot be achieved without engagement and creative input from all parts of our community.

“We have formed links and partnerships with Council, the Castlemaine State Festival, local businesses, the Central Victorian Greenhouse Alliance, Castlemaine Community House, health organisations and community groups.”

With the support of countless volunteer hours each year, MASG continues to engage, assist and educate this local community as it strives for a sustainable way of life.
