ESRI improves decision making for West Torrens*

An effective GIS enables companies to combine geographic information with multiple other data sources to better understand business processes, assets and how the environment impacts their ability to complete work.

South Australia’s City of West Torrens is currently using GIS technology from ESRI Australia.

Council has a diverse population, and as such is the keeper of a broad range of critical data, ranging from housing and demographic splits, to electoral data, socioeconomic figures and developments in progress.

Much of the data used by Council on a day to day basis contains a location element, such as addresses, map references or planning zones. If effectively managed, it can be combined and mapped onto a single geographic interface to aid in planning and development decisions.

Council needed a GIS that was intuitive, timely and accurate so it could encourage all staff to use location intelligence for everyday decision making. It chose to deploy ESRI Australia’s enterprise location intelligence solution, Dekho.

Dekho provided the solution Council needed to bridge the gap between its existing corporate databases, providing users with a single interface to view information from a location context.

The solution has become a key decision making tool for many Council departments. In particular, Council’s planning department now relies on Dekho to assist in decision making for all approvals of key city developments.

Department team members can quickly and easily introduce specific planning data as a layer within the GIS technology, allowing them to determine whether a development will significantly affect the suggested area or be hindered by outside factors, such as environmental issues.

There are currently 12 specific planning layers held within Dekho related to flooding, noise, property, transport and depot operations as well as community facilities and utility infrastructure.

When the planning department needs to make a decision relating to development of a particular suburb, all the information that helps inform that decision making process is available in a single view.

Council now has more than 40 staff regularly using Dekho to receive accurate and timely information from a diverse range of data sources.
