Wollondilly engineer takes out public works leader award

The Institute of Public Works Engineering Australia (NSW) announced its Excellence Awards 2010 in conjunction with its annual conference in Wollongong from 16–19 May.

Wollondilly Shire Council’s Works Engineer Mike Nelson was honoured by receiving the award for Public Works Leader of the Year.

Displaying great leadership skills since he commenced work at Wollondilly Shire Council in 2008, Michael Nelson has responsibility for design and construction of the works program.

He leads a diverse team of designers, surveyors, superintendents and technical officers.

He has introduced a number of initiatives, including development of a financial tracking system, weekly team meetings and development of site safety processes and systems.

“Michael is a great asset to Council and his dedication to his job is why we nominated him for this award,” said General Manager of Wollondilly Shire Council Les McMahon.

“His outstanding achievements include his redesign of a Bailey’s Bridge for Blades Bridge, Douglas Park and his work in the Roads Ahead Program, as well as Council’s ongoing works program.”

Michael said that he was honoured to receive the award and it was a reflection of the efforts put in by the entire Works team.
