Renovation works are now underway at the iconic Coogee Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC) – the first project under Randwick City Council’s Buildings for our Community program.
The program will run over seven years putting $34.8 million towards upgrading and constructing 66 buildings.
Council has given the Coogee Surf Club $350,000 towards remediating the building, removing concrete cancer, waterproofing and painting the external walls. Other work will include improving and sealing the sandstone retaining wall, upgrading the stairs located on the southern side of the building and repairing the concourse areas on the southern and western sides of the building.
Randwick Mayor John Procopiadis believes it is fitting that Coogee SLSC is the first building to be upgraded under the new program.
“The Club has been around for more than 100 years, keeping this extremely popular beach safe since 1907,” he said. “It’s important for our volunteer surf life savers to have a quality facility to work out of and to store their equipment.”
President of Coogee SLSC Tony Waller said that the Buildings for our Community program is a fantastic initiative that will leave a legacy for the citizens of Randwick for many years to come.
“It is a credit to the Mayor and Councillors for their vision in ensuring that our sporting and community groups will have facilities that are second to none,” he said.
While Randwick Council carries out the structural upgrade of the building, the club house is receiving an internal refurbishment funded by the NSW Community Building Partnership Program and NSW Sport and Recreation.
The next buildings to be upgraded under Randwick’s Buildings for our Community program are Clovelly and South Maroubra Surf Life Saving Clubs.
