Campbelltown City Council in the Macarthur region of New South Wales is committed to continually improving the health and fitness of all staff and their families.
Council’s annual Health Fair was established to improve the collective and individual health of Council employees.
It is run each October in conjunction with planned activities by the OHS Indoor and Outdoor Committees for Safe Work Australia Week.
Council has been hosting the fair for the past five years, and previously ran a similar biannual event.
Held at the Civic Hall for indoor staff and at the Works Depot for outdoor staff, the fair provides a range of information and checkups for staff, including blood pressure measurement, cholesterol tests, glucose/blood sugar tests, eyesight testing, cancer information, promotion of Council facilities such as leisure centres and education on men’s and women’s health.
In 2010, the program was expanded to include the provision of services provided by superannuation companies and relevant health funds.
Information and demonstrations were also available on physical health and fitness, healthy eating, massage and relaxation, healthy lifestyles, corporate gym membership and the Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
The EAP service is available to all staff and their families and provides short term assistance for various concerns that can disrupt wellbeing and work effectiveness.
The service, including access to both female and male counsellors, is available on site two days per week, off site, or over the telephone. 
It also provides critical incident response, which continues to provide timely and effective support to staff until the matter is resolved.
All staff are encouraged to attend the health fair each year, and are provided with a time to stop by during work hours.
Campbelltown’s Director Business Services Michael Sewell said that staff have advised that the health fair reinforces good health and provides them with helpful information.
“A number of staff join the corporate gym membership and also take the chance to learn more about the EAP counselling service provided by Council,” he said.
“Campbelltown City Council believes that happy and healthy staff are more productive both at work and at home, therefore this activity is an investment for the future.”
