Advocacy and Action

While Greater Shepparton is well positioned to meet the challenges of the future, there are a number of key projects requiring support from other government spheres to help the region continue to grow and prosper.

Road and rail

Council has partnered with the community to advocate for the continuation of the duplication of the M39 Freeway to create a state of the art transport corridor from Melbourne directly to the Goulburn Valley, Australia’s Food Bowl.

Council is also advocating for improved rail services to support people who wish to leave the car at home and travel to or from Melbourne via train for business, leisure, study or medical appointments.

The community is calling for more frequent train services and requesting the introduction of a Sprinter service to put Shepparton on a par with other similar regional cities in Victoria.

Water

Water access is a critical component of the region’s success into the future and Greater Shepparton City Council has been heavily involved in providing feedback to the Federal Government on the upcoming Murray River Basin Plan.

Council supports environmental needs, but believes the impact on people and communities needs careful consideration before changes to water access proceed. Council is also calling for investment in infrastructure upgrades to improve water efficiency and for existing water savings to be taken into account.

Advocacy kit

Council has worked with a number of key community leaders, businesses and industry representatives to develop an Ask of Government kit to highlight key projects requiring governmentsupport or funding throughout the municipality.
