New City of Greater Geraldton to be formed

After a recent plebiscite, the City of Geraldton Greenough and Shire of Mullewa will amalgamate to form a new City of Greater Geraldton. The vote was endorsed by the Western Australian Local Government Minister John Castrilli. He said the outcome was very pleasing and proved electors believe reform was worth fighting for.

“I congratulate these communities on making this decision to form the City of Greater Geraldton,” he said.”The amalgamation of the City of Geraldton Greenough and the Shire of Mullewa will enable Local Governments to deliver a higher level and more diverse range of services.

“In particular, the Mullewa community will gain from being a part of a bigger local government body, financially strong and able to address challenges emerging in the future.

“It is also important to congratulate the Mayor of Geraldton Greenough, the Shire President of Mullewa, elected members and staff for presenting this opportunity to their communities. They have all displayed strong leadership in recognising the positive impact of reform.”

The Department of Local Government will now undertake the statutory processes to give effect to the amalgamation and a commissioner will be appointed to oversee the practical steps necessary in bringing together the operations of the Local Governments.

“I will work closely with those Local Governments which have embraced this process to date and hope that following this positive result, other Local Governments follow suit,” John Castrilli said.

Shire of Mullewa President Nino Messina welcomed the result.

“Going back to our original decision to approach the City of Geraldton-Greenough in 2009, we have always believed that a progressive merger between our local governments would achieve a positive and beneficial outcome for both communities,” he said.

City of Geraldton Greenough Mayor Ian Carpenter said that he understands that change can be difficult and challenging for a community.

“We clearly acknowledge there are those who hold strong views and concerns and we are resolutely committed to ensuring we bring all the community forward on this journey and make sure we get it right and address any concerns and issues,” Councillor Carpenter said.

Councillor Carpenter and Councillor Messina strongly endorsed the record funding committed by the Minister for Local Government.

In another proposed amalgamation, between the Perenjori, Mingenew, Three Springs and Morawa Shires, residents have voted against the move. The Local Government Minister John Castrilli said he is disappointed the second merger will not proceed but respects the wishes of the electors.
