Launceston Aquatic Facility combines best of heritage and environment

Employing world’s best practice principles for heritage and sustainable design, the Launceston Aquatic facility provides a much loved health and recreation environment for Launceston residents and visitors alike. The complex was recognised in the Tasmanian Local Government Awards for Excellence in 2010, where it won the Delivering Excellence in Natural or Built Environments Award

The $26 million regional aquatic facility provides an environment for social, recreational, sporting and health and wellbeing activities for all ages and community groups.

Launceston City Council Mayor Albert van Zetten congratulated all those involved in delivering these very worthwhile programs.

“We are doing some great and often innovative work in our community and organisation and it’s fantastic to be recognised for this through the Local Government Association of Tasmania Awards.”

Construction of the new facility was undertaken after extensive community consultation to ensure minimal disruption during the construction process and maximum satisfaction within the community once it was completed. Water wise plants have been used for landscaping, which has included 100 new plants and trees.

Designed by Peddle Thorp Architects, environmental factors were kept in mind through the implementation of sustainable design initiatives to minimise environmental impact and operational costs by reducing water and electrical use.All rainwater collected from the roof is stored in an underground tank and used for flushing toilets and washing down the pool concourse.
