Mundaring tree program selected as award finalist
The Shire of Mundaring’s Tree Canopy and Understorey Program has been selected as a finalist in the ‘Government Leading by Example’ category of the 2011 Western Australian Environment Awards.
The Tree Canopy and Understorey Program is a Landcare initiative that provides local native seedlings free to ratepayers within the Shire for planting on private property and reserves.
Since commencing in 1989, it has been responsible for the distribution and establishment of over 1,200,000 local native plants species within the shire.
The seedlings offer multiple environmental benefits including the rehabilitation of degraded sites, an increase in food and shelter for native animals, a decrease in soil and water erosion along creek lines and a decrease in drinking water usage for garden irrigation.
Shire President Helen Dullard said that the Tree Canopy and Understorey Program produced a significant and positive impact in actively promoting a landcare ethic in the community.
“The program incorporates an extensive range of activities relating to community education, planting advice, promotion of responsible land management, relationship building and the integration of activities that link to the Shire’s strategic initiatives,” she said.
“Being selected as a finalist is a fantastic achievement and reflects the Shire’s ongoing commitment to protecting Western Australia’s unique environment.”
