Recycling award for Dowerin
The Western Australian Wheat-belt Shire of Dowerin, 165 kilometres east of Perth received the award for the ‘Local Government Waste Reduction Initiative’ category in the WA Waste Authority Waste Awards in Perth.
With a population of around 700 people, the Shire has demonstrated that small scale recycling can be effective in minimising potential recyclables going to landfill.
Natural Resource Management Officer Adrian Price attended the WA Waste Authority Waste Awards in Perth recently, where he received the award from State Environment Minister Bill Marmion.
The Shire of Dowerin was recognised for its efforts in promoting recycling throughout the district over recent years, thereby reducing the volume of recyclable materials that go into landfill.
“The new Dowerin Recycling Centre was opened in April and has become a valuable addition to the community,” Mr Price said.
“The recycling centre takes all recyclables including paper, cardboard, glass, plastic, aluminium cans as well as e-waste including computers and TVs.” he said.
“Since the centre opened, the community has been re-educated in the importance of recycling. There has been a significant increase in local recycling and funds are being returned to the community.” he said.
The Department of Environment and Conservation is now recommending a number of rural shires to visit the Dowerin Recycling Centre.
