Harmony Day highlights in Orange

A colourful Brazilian tradition which combines acrobatic dancing with ‘mostly’ non-contact martial arts, was a highlight of this year’s Harmony Day in Orange.

A Capoeira performance group from Sydney were the headliners at the 18 March open-air event. Originating among the slave culture of Brazil as a form of non-armed combat, a contemporary Capoeira performance involves spectacular overhead kicks, tumbling and near misses between two combatants.

“The Capoeria performance was one of many examples of Orange’s rich cultural diversity to be enjoyed on the day,” Orange City Council’s Migrant Support Worker Anni Gallagher said. “Harmony Day was a chance for everyone to come together and join in local activities through action, performance, fashion and food.”

A contemporary fashion parade included local fashion businesses and models.

Orange City Council’s Services Policy Committee chair Cr Fiona Rossiter said, “The theme for Harmony Day this year ‘Sport: Play, Engage, Inspire’ recognised the important role and positive influence that sport has in Australia. Sport fosters a sense of belonging, acceptance and understanding of other cultures for all people involved.

“This year’s event saw hundreds of local residents come to experience the day,” she said “As well as sporting organisations, community groups, government agencies, churches, schools and workplaces that have contributed to the amazing entertainment program.
